A simplified transfer of the results of a conventional construction project replacing the binder and the surface layer to a road maintenance project where asphalt reinforcement was successfully applied gives a good estimate of the CO2 savings for the rehabilitation method with asphalt reinforcement.
More than 60 % of the CO2 emissions generated during the entire construction phase are caused solely by the energy-intensive production of the asphalt mixes and the associated processes. This was the result of a detailed investigation of all CO2 emissions in a conventional construction project.
In comparison, a CO2 saving of 24.3 t CO2 per rehabilitated road kilometre can be identified in a project where the cracked binder is reinforced rather than replaced. The reinforcement stops the reflection cracks.
