Rehabilitation of asphalt pavement

Location of work/project:

Company:

Summary:

New York - USA

HUESKER Inc.

The airport’s consulting engineer specified HUESKER’s HaTelit® C 40/17 geogrid as reinforcement for the overlay. HaTelit® was chosen because of its ability to delay reflective cracking and its ease of installation. Because the extra step of a leveling layer was not required with HaTelit®, the work was completed quickly. An inspection of the runway in 2007 showed the pavement to be in very good condition.

When runway 10/28 at Albany International Airport in New York was in need of resurfacing in 2000, the airport’s consulting engineer specified HUESKER’s HaTelit® C 40/17 geogrid as reinforcement for the overlay. HaTelit® was chosen because of its ability to delay reflective cracking and its ease of installation. The project specifications required milling of the existing pavement, installing HaTelit® and overlaying with hot mix asphalt. Because of its flexibility and exceptional resistance to shear stress, HaTelit® was able to be placed directly onto the milled surface without a leveling course.

This was extremely important to the contractor, as the major constraint for the project was the time the runway was accessible. Nightly repairs to the runway including painted lines had to be completed by 6 a.m. Because the extra step of a leveling course was not required with HaTelit®, the work was completed quickly and more area could be paved each night.

As a value engineered solution, HaTelit® saved the airport authority both time and money during installation because crews did not have to find and treat each individual crack in the existing pavement.

The runway is exhibiting few reflective cracks despite the amount of traffic and the various types of aircraft that use the international airport. Airport officials are pleased with the condition of the HaTelit® reinforced runway pavement seven years after its installation.
HaTelit® is an asphalt reinforcement product that combines a high tensile modulus polyester geogrid with a lightweight polypropylene nonwoven fabric.

This composite is coated with bitumen to enhance the bond between the asphalt layers. HaTelit® reinforcement geogrids increase the tensile strength of the asphalt layer and reduce tensile stress peaks. Reflective cracking of the overlay is also controlled due to HaTelit® and asphalt having similar thermal expansion properties. HaTelit® reduces maintenance costs by increasing the service life of an asphalt overlay by a factor of three to four.
