Challenge
Mountains around Kappl in Tyrol show the shape of a natural funnel which possibly guides major avalanches directly into the town. The topography of the area does not allow the installation of avalanche protections at the very top of the mountains while at the same time protection closer to the town would not lead to success as the occurring masses of snow will create unstoppable energy until there.

Solution
It was decided to place a dam on a level where it cuts the avalanche before it picks up full speed and power. The length of the dam has been chosen due to the topography, height and inclination (66°) have been needed to effectively stop the avalanche. As a slope with 66° inclination is not possible with natural soil only, a geosynthetic reinforced system was chosen. The TenCate System Polyslope S is intended to become fully vegetated within a certain period of time.

The TenCate System “Polyslope S” consists of three components:

  • Geosynthetic reinforcement
  • Glassfibre erosion control
  • Steel shuttering

The system is intended to become fully vegetated within a certain period of time but as vegetation becomes critical on a sea level of 2.200 m an adapted version of the system has been developed:

  • Steel frames have been galvanized to allow a longer period until vegetation appears.
  • Geogrids have been fold back into the next layer above, to add safety against dynamic avalanche impact forces.

Benefit
This solution helps to contain future snow, ice and debris slides and direct them away from the resort village of Kappl below.
