Reconstruction of roads – using Fibertex Geotextiles

The project:

  • 15 km of road constructed on a fine sandy subsoil and fractions of marl.
  • Fibertex Geotextiles used for separation and filtration in the subbase

Over the years the coastline of SETE has been exposed to the strong forces of the Mediterranean waves. To prevent further erosion of the coast line, the littoral zone was redesigned, and the alignment of the road along the coast was moved further inland 100m. The construction of the new road was carried out in 2008.

 

The Fibertex solution:

To stabilise the subbase and to prevent washing out of the fine sandy material in the subbase, yet still allowing free movement of water, it was required that a nonwoven geotextile with documented ability to create a high functional filter was used. This should be the case, even in areas where dynamic water flows could be expected, causing higher risk of movement and washing out of fines. Fibertex Geotextiles F-500M and F-400M (needlepunch only) were installed between the construction layers as a filter and a separator.

Geotextile functions:

To ensure the stability of the road construction, the geotextile is placed between the construction layers to prevent migration and mingling of materials, yet allowing free movement of water. The three-dimensional effect of the nonwoven geotextiles (needlepunch only) was considered ideal for this purpose being efficiently able to create a natural filter together with the surrounding soil.

At the same time the chosen geotextiles have a high resistance level to damage during installation due to the optimum relation between mechanical strength and elongations.

Asqual certified Fibertex Geotextiles F-500M and F-400M were chosen for the project.
