Protection of a platform against cracking with a patented geocomposite solution

Project: The development of Marseille harbor, one of the most important places on the Mediterranean sea, required the construction of two new terminals for container ships unloading.

The capacity of Fos sur Mer, on the west side of the harbor, will triple with the “2XL” project, including 1,200 meters of docks with a draught over 14 meters for high capacity container-ships.

With 2XL platform, a quantity of 1,5 million of TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers will be handled each year.

The asphalt of the platform has to resist to the extreme loads induced by the unloading frames and the traffic.

Specifications:

Asphalt platform of 56,000 sqm, specific protection against reflective cracking

Engineering solution: Texinov patented geocomposite Notex® Glass with high traction modulus. The geocomposite is pre coated with an emulsion, improving adhesion between the bitumen layer and the textile.

Conclusion: the asphalt reinforcement geocomposite interacts with the bitumen bound layer, prevents cracking and enhances the stiffness and lifetime of the platform. Tests performed in situ proved a very good performance of the asphalt layer in severe conditions.
