Geosynthetics reduce the use of ballast

When constructing the platform to a new retention basin for contaminated material on an industrial site in Luxemburg, it was decided to double the waterproof membrane with a geotextile to protect it from potential puncturing during the installation. As the aggregate ballast is poured, the geotextile absorbs the energy and prevents damage to the waterproof underlay. At the same time, it allows for a reduced layer of ballast, thus limiting the CO2 emissions resulting from the extraction and transportation of aggregates. As a result, the construction is more secure, uses less material, is more sustainable and contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions.
