The project:

This project covers a reconstruction of Canal du Midi over a length of approximately 5 km.

  • 5 km of navigable canal constructed on a fine sandy subsoil and fractions of marl
  • Fibertex geotextile used for filtration and for separation under rocks.

The project was carried out in 2005 over a period of three months using professional divers.

 

The Fibertex solution:

The Fibertex geotextile was used as an essential part of the erosion protection built up on the slopes and the bottom of the canal. As the current and wave forces in the canal in this area can be quite strong, boulders of up to 0.5 tonnes were placed as protection layer directly on the geotextile. The geotextile was placed to prevent washing out of fines from the subsoil, yet still allowing free movement of water and preventing erosion caused by waves.

By using a geotextile in the structure, significant material savings are achieved as complicated built up of filter layers is avoided, ensuring a cost-advantageous and environmentally-responsible solution.

Fibertex F-500 was installed between the subsoil and the top layer of boulders as a filter and a separator.

Geotextile functions:

In the erosion protection design, the geotextile is used for the functions of filtration and separation. As boulders of up to 0.5 tonnes are placed directly on the geotextile, the mechanical properties of the geotextile is of high importance to ensure a high level of resistance to damage during installation. By choosing Fibertex F-500 an effective combination of filter and separation properties and mechanical was achieved. Consequently, the installation was carried out without any damages to the geotextile, hereby ensuring a full functional filter and separator in the finished construction.
